Everyone can create a web site but as I have learned over the years that really doesn’t mean a whole lot unless people actually visit your site. Unless you have built a website for a class, you probably built the web site for a practical purpose. Whether it is to share information, sell a product, sell an idea, display work, or any of the thousands of reasons anyone would create a web site.
Every site needs some form of SEO or advertising or else the web site is absolutly useless because no one will see it there. Now when I speak of SEO and advertising it can be as simple as adding some new content every few days or telling some friends about your site. Or as difficult and expensive as having someone completly optimize your website for search engines and purchasing PPC ads off of Google or Yahoo. You should pick your route based on what you are trying to accomplish with your web site. My site (www.mikenetpc.com) is ranked based on work that I have done that hasn’t cost me anything or maybe just a few dollars.
Everyone wants to think that they can put up a great web site and the search engines will find it and people will start going to it and buying stuff. Well sorry to dissapoint you but that is not the case at all. It doesn’t matter how great your web site is, if it doesn’t display within the top 3 pages of Google, Yahoo, or Bing for the keywords your target audience is searching for then it probably won’t get a lot of traffic.
So for any web site that you expect to get traffic to you need to come up with a SEO and advertising plan. Regardless of how big or small your web site is you should have some form of SEO and advertising plan to promote your web site and draw traffic to it.
